BOARD: Taking Action to Protect Ontario taxpayers, August 31, 2009

BOARD: Dwight Duncan - Minister of Finance

"I'm here today to talk about our government's move towards greater protection of taxpayers' money and increased accountability for the people of Ontario. I'm making public expense claim reports and receipts for the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation's executive and senior level staff."

"This is a large corporation with $6 billion in revenue and a dividend to the province of $1.8 billion. A lot of good people work hard to create this kind of value for all Ontarians - I don't want to lose sight of that."

"Nevertheless, I'm dissapointed with what has been brought to my attention. The expenses are a symptom of a much larger problem. The OLG has a long history of issues, and we are taking action today to ensure the protection of taxpayers money and increase the accountability of the organization."

"I've asked the Auditor-General to conduct a review of the expense practices at OLG, including their approval process."

"This morning, I accepted the resignation of the Chair, and the entire Board of Directors at the OLG. These positions have been filled on an interim basis with senior-level officials from the Ontario Public Service. The first action of the interim board was to end Kelly MacDougall's employment as CEO of the OLG."

"Going forward, new leadership will work with a mandate to maximize OLG's performance and instill a culture of respect for the public interest and taxpayer dollars."

"The Premier will have more to say about that in the coming days."
