How would Ontario families benefit from these tax changes?

The HST would be just one part of our proposed comprehensive package of tax changes - changes that would strengthen the economy and benefit Ontarians.

Yes, sales tax for some items is going up. But here's the benefit.

Personal income taxes are going down for most people.

About 93 percent of Ontario taxpayers would get a permanent income tax cut.

We're ensuring that low-income families and seniors are supported through a new permanent sales tax credit and an enhanced property tax credit.

We're also supporting Ontario taxpayers by providing transition payments. Families that make less than $160,000 a year would receive three payments totalling $1,000 tax-free. Individuals making less than $80,000 would get three payments totalling $300 tax-free.

Items including children's clothing and footwear, children's car seats and booster seats, diapers, books and feminine hygiene products would continue to be exempt from the provincial portion of the new harmonized sales tax.
