YWCA Official Opening

Safe, affordable homes are the foundation to better quality of life for families and their children.

Affordable housing plays an important role in supporting the growth and health of communities across the province.

The creation of the affordable housing component of the YWCA Elm Centre created 750 jobs and helps meet the needs of families and individuals in the Toronto area.

Pam, YWCA: The YWCA Elm Centre, this is Wynona's Place, and we've got a photo project that we're doing here, which is called "Photo Voice". We bought ten cameras for YWCA tenants and we lend them out and they go around and take pictures and we workshop what the idea of community is. So it's really to talk about community, shared leadership in this new housing project. We talked a lot about security, safety, belonging, community, new beginnings. I mean, that's one of the things about Elm Centre that is really important to most people who move here. It's like, here we have a chance, a new beginning.

Janet, Tenant: Now, I feel so strongly that I have a safe place to live. I don't have to worry about being yelled at anymore or being allowed to have plants growing in my own apartment. I feel that connecting with the other women that live here has made me so much happier. I'm really hoping that the vision for more places like Elm Centre to be built so that more women and children can be housed safely, and have a real, true sense of community, it's just unbelievable. And I know they will benefit because I know that I have.
