TEXT: Commemoration: 65th Anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy

SUPER: Major General Richard Rohmer

On that day I had the rank of flying officer which is in the army, First Lieutenant. I had just tu
ed 20. We took off just at dawn and we went straight across the channel and as we crossed the channel we were absolutely astounded by what we saw. The water on the way across to Normandy was littered with ships battle ships everything. You could practically walk on it. I had the best seat in the house. At 500 feet over the Juno beach watching all of this happening with great explosions unde
eath me and these landing crafts coming in.

We all knew it was D-day - the biggest day militarily for all of mankind. We had the third largest military force behind the United States and Great Britain at the time. We had a million people in uniform out of 11 million citizens. It was significant then and it's significant now. So we're putting together a parade and ceremony that will recognize the Canadian and Ontario effort made by those forces, army navy and air forces a long time ago.
