OSP Critical Thinking

Mobile

Location/Activity: Animation graphically illustrating the narration.

Narrator: Critical Thinking. What is critical thinking and why is it an Essential Skill?

Narrator: Critical Thinking is making judgments by using criteria to evaluate ideas and information and the related consequences. Think of it as "Thinking before you act." Or "Looking before you leap." Critical thinking is NOT about being critical all the time. Critical thinking IS about asking good questions so that you really understand what will or could happen when you decide to do something. When thinking critically you carefully consider the consequences of several different options before judging which is the best option to go with.

Narrator: We think critically every day. Just watch.

Location/Activity: Female student sits on a couch in her living room with a laptop, talking on a cell phone. We can't distinguish what the person on the other line is saying.

Student: Yeah. I'm doing it now. The deadline for job applications is tomorrow at 5.
Student: No, I'm pretty pleased. I think I have a real shot at the job. My résumé looks good. [We see resume open on screen]
Student: You're kidding. You saw that online? Hold on. Let me pull it up. [Screen transitions from resume to Facebook, then to a picture of a passed out boy with "HAHAHA" written on his face]
Student: Oh I don't believe it. He is going to be so embarrassed. Wow. Can you imagine if HE was applying for this job and somebody saw that?
Student: What? My profile? Um… no, I'm sure it's OK. [She realizes it's not OK] Look, gotta go. Text you later. [Leans forward and sets laptop down on table]
Student: OK, let me think about this. Is there anything on my profile that I wouldn't want someone to see… What about this picture? [An image appears on screen of Student in a bar holding a pitcher] OK for friends, not for employers. Delete. [She deletes the image]
Student: So what would happen if they followed this link? [She clicks on a link on her Facebook profile which leads to an article entitled "10 Tips for Doing Your Makeup While Driving With Your Knees"]
Student: Nope. Delete again. [She deletes the image]
Student: C'mon. Think it through. What's the worst that can happen? [Graphic appears on screen with the word "No" pointing to "Interview," then "Job," then "$" as she says the words] Maybe nothing - but maybe I don't get the interview. So, no job. No money.
Student: What did they say in that OSP video …oh yeah...make social media work for you and not against you!
Student: Right. Delete, Delete. Delete. [She deletes the images, then cycles through the remaining images, which are pleasant photos of her near various landmarks]
Student: There. Now my profile looks as good as my resume does. Hope I get that interview.
